Swedish Melanoma Study Group
The Swedish Melanoma Study Group (SMSG) was initiated in 1977 by Ulrik Ringborg, oncologist at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm and surgeons Carl-Magnus Rudenstam and Lars-Olof Hafström at Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg. From start the aim has been to have a multiprofessional representation from all the Swedish health care regions and to conduct joint studies and be a platform to exchange ideas and experiences in the field of melanoma managements and research. The Swedish Melanoma Registry (SweMR) was also established by SMSG. Multiple studies have been conducted throughout the years, including registry studies, studies on familial melanoma and studies involving surgical procedures, and oncological treatments. In the recent years there has been an augmented focus on the new melanoma treatments with targeted and immunotherapy. Altogether, the research collaborations within SMSG have resulted in hundreds of publications.
